Cooking Opportunities Workshop

Food indeed connects people, but it also can include, integrate and give life opportunities. In this workshop, you will have the chance to participate in a cooking class run by a social non-profit that trains migrants in the areas of cooking and hospitality, and of course, try and taste different and delicious meals prepared by you.

In a city as diverse as Barcelona, we come across or interact all the time with people in search of an opportunity that allows them to start a labor insertion career, or to rediscover a way to achieve decent living conditions. This group continues to grow, and does not receive all the answers it needs. In addition, the community also has a space that it cannot and should not avoid in the collective construction of alternatives.

Before these people lose hope and become discouraged, this school-restaurant and non-profit opens the opportunity for training as Waiters or Kitchen Helpers. A training that respects their interests, their life stories, their knowledge, and cultural characteristics. But they are not satisfied with it becoming only space for meeting and re-knowledge. The organization behind the school-restaurant claims the economic nature of its alternative: it allows these people access to working conditions that keep them away from situations of exploitation and injustice.

In this workshop, more than learning how to use different ingredients and cook very multicultural meals, you will have the chance to know some of these life stories, learn more about the migration situation in Catalonia, success stories of students, and many more social projects that this amazing non-profit runs.

Once you enter the school-restaurant you will be presented with a tour, that will guide you through the walls of the restaurant as if you were in an art gallery. In this tour, you will get to know all the integration and awareness projects of the organization, meet the face of the participants, and the strong impact these projects have been bringing to the community. After the tour you will immerse in the kitchen, guided by a chef and some of the students of the school, and the experience ends with flavors and tastes that you will keep in your head forever.

By participating in this workshop you are supporting these projects and non-profit. Join it!

More about this Program

What is the itinerary of this experience?

18:00 pm | Starts the Workshop

21:00 pm | End of the Workshop

Do I need to speak the local language?

No, you don't need to have any previous skills in the local language! All of our programs are run entirely in English and our guides and staff are all comfortable speaking English as well! But we always encourage our participants to get acquainted with some of the most basic terms and expressions, as even just a simple "Good morning!" in the local language can be a great icebreaker to start interacting with the locals!

There are also language lessons available for volunteers. The language lessons can be booked before or on the arrival. Lessons are taught by a professional teacher and tailored to each volunteer’s current language level.
