This experience aims to enhance and disseminate the natural and cultural heritage of the region where it is located, in Serra da Estrela.
The Historical Villages of Serra da Estrela keep ancestral traditions, breathtaking landscapes, and unique life stories.
We want travelers who choose this experience of ethical tourism to be part of these stories and contribute to fair trade, and economic and social development in this region not forgetting the traditions that characterize it.
Sabugueiro village is the starting point of this itinerary and where travelers are accommodated. A village located close to the heart of the natural park. You will have the opportunity to visit the community oven of the village, taste the wines of the region, taste the typical and traditional dishes of the region, see the village from different perspectives and also contribute to the support of a local NGO that is dedicated to the training of people with disabilities, consuming the food products made by them with local products.
You will also have the opportunity to know the fauna and flora of Serra da Estrela Natural Park through the environmental interpretation center, and immerse yourself in the springs of the rivers that born on this mountain and visit other iconic villages.
Your accommodation in Sabugueiro village is the result of restoration work on a traditional house in the heart of the Serra Natural Park da Estrela. The restoration work was guided by the maximum reuse of original materials, the interior woods were kept on the floors, and in terms of furniture, most of them were reused/recycled.
This accommodation maintains testimonies of its period of construction, associated with the comfort our travelers demand.

What is the itinerary for this experience?
Day 1
Arrival, between 19h and 21h, to the Mountain Village, Sabugueiro!
Day 2
8:00 Breakfast served at the local accommodation with regional products (bread, the famous Requeijão from Serra da Estrela with jam, sausages, coffee, milk, fruit)
9:00 Visit to the Environmental Interpretation Center of Serra da Estrela
Depending on the period of the year you have the chance to join one of their environmental actions that can go from – reforestation, bird monitoring, among others.

11:00 Beginning of the Mountain Villages trip (Cabeça – Mountain Village and Piódão- Historical Village)
12:30 Picnic lunch in Piódão also with regional products
Pedestrian route (1h) from Piódão to Foz d’Égua.
Return to Sabugueiro village, car journey along the River Alva, stop at several points of interest, such as small river beaches

Day 3

9:00 Pedestrian walk around the village. Discovering the village, beyond the main road. Pedestrian route (PR – Small Route – 2h30) and visit to the historic nucleus of the village, such as the Church, the Community Oven, the Museological Space, Ferreiro Fountain and the River beach.
13:00 Lunch at Sabugueiro Village in Local Restaurant
14:30 Visit to the Rossim Valley and Mondego’s River string (10 minutes by car from Sabugueiro)
Free time, return home.
