Naples: the center of the Mediterranean

Naples: the center of the Mediterranean

Naples, located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, is a city whose millenary history has left indelible traces in the urban area and its beautiful surroundings, where it is still possible to find pleasant and unexpected green areas. A trip to Naples is a journey through the cultures and people who have crossed, transformed, dominated and contaminated it. The complexity of the city is reflected today in the many associations involved in the creative, social and environmental protection scene that make Naples a vital center full of contamination. We will walk the streets of the historic center, from east to west and from top to bottom, crossing alleys and descending stairs to discover the history of the city, today and always made up of the history of its inhabitants from all backgrounds. We will visit the Phlegraean side of the city and the magical Pozzuoli, once a gateway to the eastern Mediterranean and today a quiet seaside village. And again the island of Procida and Posillipo, places rich in nature, archeology and myths, where the yellow of the tuff meets the blue of the sea. A journey to discover an unprecedented Naples rich in humanity.

The trip proposes the encounter with people, associations and realities that take care of the territory in a different way and contribute to making it better day after day. In the heart of the Spanish Quarters we will get to know the experience of urban regeneration of the Foqus Foundation which, within the spaces of the ancient Montecalvario Institute, has initiated groups of young people and women towards self-entrepreneurship experiences. Together with the companions of foreign origin of Migrantour Napoli and with their eyes we will cross streets and stories, memories and traditions and we will discover the plural face of the city. There will also be meetings with organizations that deal with environmental protection, such as the Gaiola Interdisciplinary Study Center and the Vivara Association of Procida, and with family-run farms. Finally, in the Sanità district we will learn about the beautiful story of the Paranza Social Cooperative which has made the conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage an opportunity for redemption for young people and for everyone to be reborn. Founded in 2000, Casba Società Cooperativa Sociale is the first cooperative founded in Naples by citizens of foreign origin. It is made up of cultural mediators and operators from different countries of the world who deal with integration and social inclusion. It promotes the Migrantour Napoli initiative, within the European network Migrantour, and organizes the exhibition Racconti dalla Città-Mondo which, through the projection of films and shorts, dialogues and urban itineraries, compares narrators and narrators of different origins and gives voice to the plurality that inhabits our cities. Since 2018, it has been promoting the “Guess who’s coming to dinner?” that on the last Saturday of the month, families and people of foreign origin open the doors of their homes for a dinner to meet and get to know.
