6 ways to travel more sustainably in 2026

24th April 2026

Although the growth of tourism has boosted local economies and fostered development, it also raises the challenge of balancing these benefits with the negative impacts associated with increased travel. These include environmental degradation, pollution, overtourism, and rising costs of living.

Since its foundation in 2015, one of ImpacTrip’s main targets has been precisely that of finding a compromise between ensuring volunteers have an enriching experience while also respecting and fostering the development of the environment and local communities.

All the offered programs have indeed been designed to align with this ambitious goal.

That is why volunteers are encouraged to adopt environmentally-friendly habits from the start of their journey, with the hope that these practices will become a lasting part of their lives.

Here, we’re sharing tips that apply to every trip!

  1. Use efficient modes of transportation

Approximately 8% of the world’s carbon emissions are linked to travel and tourism. Although all means of transport require energy, some of them have a way smaller impact on the environment. For example, consider taking trains or buses for trips close to home, and once at your destination, opt to walk or bike to get around.

  1. Opt for lower-emission flights

Try to book non-stop flights, choosing airlines that prioritize fuel-efficient planes, sustainable fuels, and waste reduction practices.

  1. Preserve water and energy

Tourists often consume significantly more water and energy than local residents, creating challenges for destinations with limited resources.

You could take simple steps like turning off lights, the TV, and other electronics when not in use. Opt for a quick shower instead of a bath, hand-wash your clothes, and hang the "Do Not Disturb" sign to avoid unnecessary laundering.

  1. Avoid single-use plastics

Always carry a reusable water bottle and refill it at filtered water fountains instead of buying plastic bottles. Another way to reduce waste is to avoid ordering takeout, as it often comes in plastic packaging.

  1. Stay at eco-friendly accommodations

The most effective way to make a difference is by choosing businesses that minimize their environmental impact and actively support the well-being of local communities. Choose a hotel that is reducing its footprint through measures such as energy-efficient appliances, renewable energy, automatic temperature control, local sourcing, and recycling.

Our Impact Beach House exemplifies these principles perfectly, offering a model of sustainable hospitality.

  1. Respect the local community

Wherever you go, remember that the destination you’re visiting is someone else’s home. Always be aware that certain gestures or words may be considered offensive in some places, especially at religious sites. Only visit locations where tourists are welcomed, and be sure to follow any guidelines. This might include removing your shoes, covering your shoulders, speaking quietly, or refraining from taking photos.
