The Ocean Starts With Us: Youth Taking Action for a Cleaner and More Conscious Sea

"The Ocean Starts With Us" is more than just a slogan, it’s the name of a solidarity project that invites everyone to recognize their role in protecting marine ecosystems. Funded by the European Union through the Solidarity Projects of the European Solidarity Corps, this initiative was created by five young people committed to sustainability, volunteering, and local action with a global impact.

Supported by Impact Beach House, the project unfolds over the course of a year, with creative, educational, and hands-on activities that bring young people and the community closer to the reality of our oceans — beautiful, yet increasingly threatened.

A project created by youth, for everyone

"The Ocean Starts With Us" was entirely designed by a group of five young people who met through Impact Beach House and its volunteering and community engagement initiatives. United by a passion for the environment and a desire for change, they envisioned a series of activities that call for conscious action, art, and active involvement.

With the technical and logistical support of Impact Beach House, they brought to life a plan of action that invites other young people, schools, NGOs, and social institutions to reflect, act, and create around ocean protection.

What has already happened?

From quizzes and beach clean-ups to cinema nights with documentaries about ocean conservation, the project is already creating opportunities for non-formal environmental education with real and visible impact.

What’s coming next?

The project continues to grow and inspire. Upcoming activities include:

• Workshops with marine ecosystem and artivism specialists
  
• Beach and underwater clean-ups, with volunteers equipped with snorkels and plenty of enthusiasm
  
• Photography sessions and creative contests, challenging participants to capture the beauty and fragility of the sea
  
• Activities with social institutions, involving young people with fewer opportunities
  

The project will culminate in a final public exhibition, where the community can see the creative results and reflect on the collective impact generated throughout the year.

The ocean truly starts… with us

This project is a powerful example of what can happen when youth are given voice and space. With creativity, dedication, and a spirit of collaboration, these five young people are building a local movement with deep and lasting reach.

More than changing the whole world at once, they’re shifting mindsets, engaging the community, and reminding us that the ocean — its health, beauty, and survival — starts with each and every one of us.
